These reports went so far as to suggest that Perfect Dark may not release within the lifespan of the Xbox Series X/S, with the first-person shooter instead set for release on a next-generation Microsoft console. Insiders claimed that Perfect Dark and Fable 4 were incredibly far from release, with the delay of both Xbox-exclusive titles possibly motivating Microsoft to make acquisitions to bolster its lineup of releases. While many first-person shooter fans are looking forward to a new Perfect Dark project, leaks dating back to last year already suggested that the project would take years to develop. However, the studio is allegedly confident it its current structure. Video Games Chronicle also spoke to former senior developers, who claimed that a lack of creative autonomy and slow development progress were responsible for the huge onslaught of exits from The Initiative. These departures include high-level creators, like Perfect Dark game director Dan Neuburger and design director Drew Murray. Analysis of LinkedIn profiles reveals that up to half of The Initiative's staff left the studio in the last year, leaving less than 50 employees remaining. Acting as a true successor to GoldenEye 007, the Perfect Dark series features both single-player campaigns and multiplayer game modes which allow players to cooperate or compete. The Perfect Dark series casts players as Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute who finds herself caught up in a sci-fi conspiracy involving two rival alien races.
